The Defence Section is headed by the Defence Adviser, Captain Alan Rycroft, a Royal Navy Captain. He is the personal representative in Brunei of the United Kingdom Chief of Defence Staff and is responsible for:

• Provision of operational military and politico-military advice to the High Commission, the UK Ministry of Defence and the Brunei Ministry of Defence;

• Support to Defence Diplomacy by fostering and developing defence-related bilateral links between UK and Brunei. This includes promoting UK military doctrine and training and encouraging defence co-operation and regional stability;

• Provision of a link between the Brunei Garrison in Seria and the Brunei Ministry of Defence;

• Formal military representational duties; and

• Liaison with the UK Trade & Investment Defence & Security Organisation, UKTI DSO.
