High Commissioner's profile
Rob and Julia Fenn, with their boys Alexander (6) and Kit (4), arrived in Brunei in August 2009, after four years in Cyprus - where Rob was Deputy High Commissioner. Rob joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1983. His first posting was The Hague, followed by tours in Lagos (Nigeria), London (working on South Africa), New York (human rights), Rome (economy) and London (UK engagement with Turkey, Cyprus and Greece).
Rob was born in Rangoon in 1962 - the son of a diplomatic family, which later lived in Algeria, New York, China, Burma (again), Ireland and India (from where Sir Nicholas Fenn retired as High Commissioner). He met Julia at school (Bath, England) and they both graduated from Cambridge University - Rob in Classical Philosophy, Julia in History of Art. After research in Italy and the US, Julia worked at the National Gallery of Scotland. Specialising in Dutch and Flemish Art, she was also later Deputy to the Director.
The Fenns have a flat in Hampstead and enjoy London life - the Heath in all weathers - and the British countryside. Rob’s hobbies are (armchair) architecture and cosmology, whodunnits, music and Stoke City Football Club.
Rob Fenn is proud to represent the UK in Brunei, as steward of a relationship precious to both countries. Britain and Brunei respect their long traditions, which provide an anchor in a fast-changing world. The High Commissioner’s hope is to build on that foundation, and help Brunei seize all its opportunities in the Twenty-first century.
