Our high commissioner
British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, the job I have held since May 2005, is an enjoyable and challenging role.
The UK and Brunei share a long and close relationship that remains remarkably strong today. Links between us connect our royal families; our armed forces; our education systems; our economies and many ordinary people in our two countries. As High Commissioner, I have found in Brunei a great store of affectionate regard for the UK, attributable in no small part to the number of Bruneians who have studied in or visited the UK. So I have enjoyed discovering the great richness of existing ties; as well as the challenge of finding ways to add to and improve on them.
It is invidious to pick favourites, but I have particularly admired Brunei’s pursuit of the Heart of Borneo rainforest initiative, which was no more than an embryonic idea when I first arrived. And I am proud that the UK has been able to play some supporting role in its development.
