Prestigious Chevening Scholarships up for grab (13/11/2008)

"The UK too has ambitious e-Government targets and the e-Chevening system will deliver real benefits for applicants and FCO alike," - HE Mr John Saville, the British High Commissioner to Brunei.

- Application to be made online

Once again, the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Chevening Scholarships are up for grabs. The UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) through its High Commission here is offering the scholarship to Bruneians who wish to take a one-year post-graduate studies in the UK for the 2009/ 2010 session.

For the new session, applicants need to apply via the new online application system called the E-Chevening system. "The UK too has ambitious e-Government targets and the e-Chevening system will deliver real benefits for applicants and FCO alike," said His Excellency Mr John Saville, the British High Commissioner to Brunei.

"I hope that Bruneians take this opportunity to apply for the scholarships to be part of an elite group of Chevening scholars around the world. Here in Brunei we have a vibrant group of returned scholars who have benefited both personally and professionally from the experience and have gone on to be very successful in their chosen career. I hope many more Bruneians would join in to grab this opportunity to be a part of the global Chevening scholars," he added.

Chevening scholarships are targeted towards a broad range of fields and disciplines in-line with the socio-economic development of Brunei and are particularly welcome in the following areas - international relations; politics; economics; Islamic and other finance studies. As CfBT is co-funding one of the scholarships, applications that included an education angle are also welcome.

Applicants should intend to study a one-year taught Masters qualification and should be committed to returning and contributing to Brunei’s social and economic development by implementing the new skills and knowledge acquired during their stay in the UK.

Candidates need to be citizens or permanent residents of Brunei Darussalam; should have a good honours degree and preferably be in their early to mid career. They must have at least two years’ work experience in the field they wish to study. Scholarships are not applicable for undergraduate studies or professional courses (e.g. ACCA, RIBA, ICSA and Bar Vocational courses).

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) makes the final decision on applications for Chevening scholarships. Candidates are assessed on academic merit; referees’ letters; proposed area of study and future career in line with FCO priority areas; leadership potential and potential to further strengthen the UK-Brunei bilateral relationship.

Applicants must indicate on the application form which courses and institutions they would like to attend and are strongly advised to apply to those institutions before receiving an award, as places on popular courses fill early.

All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application in February. At this time short-listed candidates will be invited for interview by mid-February.

The deadline for application is on Wednesday, 31 December 2008.

Notes for Editors
